What the Hey Computer iPhone app collects, where it's kept, who it goes to, and how to delete it. Updated 19 October 2026.
In short
- Your records stay on your own computer: your Mac, or a cloud computer that's yours alone.
- When you ask the AI, what you send goes to the AI companies named below, and only after you agree.
- Your voice is turned into text on your iPhone. The sound is never saved or sent.
- No ads, no tracking and no analytics. We don't sell your data.
- You can delete your account in the app.
What stays on your iPhone
- The addresses of computers you've connected to.
- Notes you write while your computer can't be reached, until they're sent to it.
- Your answer on the AI screen: whether you agreed, to which companies, and when.
- Your sign-in, kept in the iPhone's Keychain.
- If you use the iPhone on its own, without a computer, its records stay in the app on your iPhone, and its answers come from Apple's model on your iPhone.
Deleting the app removes all of this from your iPhone.
Microphone, camera and photos
- Voice: when you tap the microphone, or turn on “Listen for Hey Computer” while the app is open, speech is recognized on your iPhone itself. Only the text goes on to your computer; the sound is never recorded to a file or sent anywhere. A dictation can keep listening for a short while after you leave the app; the lock screen shows it, with Stop.
- Camera: used only when you choose to scan a connection code or take a photo to attach.
- Photos: the app only adds an image to Photos when you choose Save. It doesn't read your library.
What goes to your computer
What you type, say (as text) or attach goes to the computer you're connected to: your own Mac, or your cloud computer.
When that computer has it turned on, a picture of the app's screen goes with each message, so the AI can see what you see. The app never takes it on a private screen or while a password field is showing. Your computer keeps the full picture for 24 hours.
The AI companies
Before anything is sent to an AI company, the app shows a screen that names them and asks. To answer you, Hey Computer sends what you write, say or attach to:
- OpenAI (openai.com)
- TypeSafe (typesafe.ai)
- Anthropic (anthropic.com)
Each handles it under its own terms for business customers. If you choose Not now, nothing goes to them. If your computer uses your own AI key instead, what you send goes to that company under your own agreement with them.
AI can be wrong. Check anything important before you rely on it. Hey Computer is for people 18 and over.
If you sign in
You don't need an account to use the app with your own Mac. If you sign in, to create or open a cloud computer, Hey Computer's servers keep:
- Your email address and sign-in. Sign-in is handled by Clerk, with Sign in with Apple or a code we email you. There's no password.
- Your account, its members and your cloud computers.
- How much you've used, and your credits, so limits and bills are right.
- A log of account actions, like sign-ins and changes, kept up to 400 days.
- Payments go through Stripe. We don't see or keep your card number.
A cloud computer is a private computer we run for you. It keeps your records the way your Mac would. Only your account can open it.
The answer service
When answers come through Hey Computer's own answer service, it keeps a random visitor ID in a cookie, your answer on the AI screen, and counts of how much you've used, to keep within limits. It keeps an ID and time for each answer and any report you make about one, but not the text of what you asked or the answer.
Delete your account
In the app, open Your computers, tap Delete account and type delete to confirm. Delete your cloud computer first. Your sign-in and what Hey Computer keeps for you on its servers are deleted for good. We keep only a short note that the account was deleted, so an old sign-in can't bring it back. Records on your own computers stay there.
